The plot of this film is that the armies of the Dark Lord are extending their evil shadow through The Earth. So men, elves and dwarves join forces to present a battle against Sauron and his hosts. Oblivious to these preparations, Frodo and Sam enter more and more into the country of Mordor on their heroic journey to destroy the Ring of Power in the Cracks of Destiny.
About the visual effects work, Alan Lee and Mark Lewis have comopse various photographs of New Zealand landscape to create the digital arena of the Pelennor Fields. Moreover, for the battle, they recorded 450 motions for the digital horses (though deaths were animated), and also had to deal with late additions in the film, such as Trolls bursting through Minas Tirith's gates as well as the creatures that pull Grond to the gate. Besides, The Return of the King also has practical effects. In the Pyre of Denethor sequence, as the Steward of Gondor throws Pippin out of the Tomb, John Noble, threw a Fon onto a prostrate Billy Boid, who immediately pushed his head into camera to complete the illusion. A few burning torches were also reflected off a plate of glass.
Some criticism of this film are about how good it is, with an epic success and a history-making production that finishes with a masterfully entertaining final installment. There are people who say that calling this as a movie is almost an injustice because is an experience of epic scope, amazing emotional power and relentless momentum.
To sum up, this film, as the same way as the other two, is one of my favourite because of the mystery and intrigue you have while the scenes are changing. Besides, its views, animations and hilarious moments are the best ones I have ever seen in comparison with other films.
